The Internet is like the 1849 San Francisco gold rush in America during the first half of the 19th century, but is very very much bigger in impact and scope.
The discovery of gold nuggets in the Sacramento Valley in early 1848 sparked the Gold Rush, arguably one of the most significant events to shape American history. The internet, on the other hand, is to the whole world since 1980s and is still changing the government, business, cultural and personal landscapes (just to name a few) even Today.
In 1994, businesses sales done over the Internet, racked up about $200 millions.
In 2010, Internet sales totalled at around US$155 billion.
In 2013 Cyber Monday, the biggest day of the year for e-commerce in the United States, sales rose 18.4 percent to $1.735 billion, a record for a single day, according to comScore.
Nowaday, people who have an internet connection to their desktop PC, tablet or smartphone, are more likely to do e-commerce or buying thing or procure service online.
Who runs the Internet?
Some people glibly say that no one runs the Internet, but that is not true. No one owns the Internet. Each company on the Internet owns its network, and the links between the company and the Internet are owned by the phone companies and access providers.
An individual or SME owner could have a presence in the Internet, by owning a website domain and with its website being hosted by a phone company or access provider. You have the means to reach billions of potential customers just like any large or multinational company do.

Why are we still hearing horror stories of people not making much money online, after spending their hard earned cash in online business opportunities?
In principle, doing business online is no different from that of doing business offline.
- You need to have a product or service, enough people are interested in.
- It can solve their problem (business, personal and what have you) which they are facing right now
- At a price, they are happy and willing to pay for the product or service rendered
