Direct Selling, MLM, Network Marketing, Pyramid Schemes Defined
Direct selling is the marketing and selling of products directly to consumers away from a fixed retail location. Modern direct selling includes sales made through the party plan, one-on-one demonstrations, and other personal contact arrangements as well as internet sales.
Direct selling is distinct from direct marketing because it is about individual sales agents reaching and dealing directly with clients. Direct marketing is about business organizations seeking a relationship with their customers without going through an agent/consultant or retail outlet. Direct selling often, but not always, uses multi-level marketing (salesperson is paid for selling and for sales made by people he recruits or sponsors) rather than single-level marketing(salesperson is paid only for the sales he makes himself).
Network Marketing
The simplest explanation of network markeing is that it is a method of marketing that utilizes independent representatives to reach potential customers that a company otherwise would not reach with traditional online or offline marketing methods.
World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA)
Founded in 1978, the WFDSA is a non-governmental, voluntary organization representing the direct selling industry globally as a federation of national Direct Selling Associations (DSAs). There are presently over 60 national DSAs represented in its membership, and in 2012 it is estimated that worldwide retail sales accounted for more than US$169 Billion through the activities of more than 89.7 million independent sales representatives.
A pyramid scheme is a non-sustainable business model that involves promising participants payment, services or ideals, primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme or training them to take part, rather than supplying any real investment or sale of products or services to the public. Pyramid schemes are a form of fraud.
These types of schemes have existed for more than a century, some with variations to hide their true nature, and many people believe that multilevel marketing is also a pyramid scheme.
How to Identify a Pyramid Scheme from a Legitimate MLM?
Ask two questions
1. Do you risk financial loss by joining the company?
(If yes, be careful. Most direct sales firms do not require or encourage any substantial investments.)
2. Is the money you will earn primarily coming from the sale of the product or service to the ultimate consumer of that product or service?
(If no, stay away. It is most likely a fraud.)

You need to build a brand, a go-to person whom they can approach, to resolve the problems they had, to be successful affiliate marketer.
This bring us to a point where you need to pick your niche product you want to promote very carefully.
